From May 3-6, 2024, the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) will proudly mark its 20th anniversary, celebrating two decades of tireless dedication to the Uyghur cause. Established on April 16, 2004, in Munich, Germany, the WUC emerged as a beacon of hope during a tumultuous period of global upheaval, amplifying the voices of the Uyghur people and standing as a symbol of resilience in the face of immense challenges.
Over the past twenty years, the WUC has achieved significant milestones in raising awareness about the human rights abuses and genocide inflicted upon the Uyghur community.
Through relentless advocacy efforts, the WUC has garnered international attention, resulting in two Nobel Peace Prize nominations in 2023 and 2024.
These nominations serve as poignant reminders of the urgent need to address the plight of the Uyghur people and hold perpetrators of atrocities accountable.
To commemorate this historic occasion, the WUC will host a series of celebratory events in Munich, Germany, a city that holds special significance for the Uyghur diaspora in Europe.
The 20th anniversary event will feature a diverse range of activities, including panel discussions, keynote speeches, networking opportunities, and cultural showcases.
From stirring musical performances to vibrant outdoor picnics, our gathering will pay homage to the rich cultural heritage of the Uyghur people while reaffirming our unwavering commitment to the pursuit of freedom, justice, and human rights.
With approximately 300 participants expected to attend, including Uyghur activists, community leaders, camp survivors, allies, government officials, and civil society representatives from over 25 countries, our conference will serve as a powerful platform for solidarity, dialogue, and collective action.
Together, we will continue to raise our voices, advocate for justice, and stand in solidarity with the Uyghur community, reaffirming our shared commitment to building a better future for all.
The Uyghurs, also spelt Uighurs or Uygurs, are ethnically and culturally Turkic people residing in the region commonly known as East Turkistan, situated in Central Asia.
With a population estimated at over 20 million, the Uyghurs practice a moderate form of Islam and lead predominantly secular lives. However, their existence is under threat due to decades of repressive policies imposed by the Chinese government.
East Turkistan, historically the homeland of the Uyghur people, has been effectively occupied by China since 1949. Bordering nine countries, including Mongolia, Russia, and India, East Turkistan lies at the crossroads of Asia and holds immense cultural and historical significance as part of the ancient Silk Road.
Despite its rich cultural heritage, the Uyghur nation faces severe challenges under Chinese rule, including persecution based on cultural and religious grounds, arbitrary arrests, and the suppression of peaceful dissent.
The WUC remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for the rights and dignity of the Uyghur people and seeks to mobilize global support for their cause.
