RMG exporters want release of raw-materials from Ctg port

Knitwear exporters asked the government to continue delivery of imported raw materials from Chattogram port instead of inland container depots to reduce costs and save time.

The Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association made the call in a letter placed to state minister for shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Monday.

“Usually, the lion’s share of export-import of the apparel sector are done through Chattogram port. Though, export activities are done through private ICDs, import works are done through Chattogram port,” read the letter signed by BGMEA first vice-president Mohammad Hatem.

Even in the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, imported goods of the RMG sector are being released from the Chattogram port without any difficulties as it was done in the past, read the letter.

“However, we came to learn that the port authority was taking step to shift import goods delivery to private ICDs to keep the operation smoother. This will increase delivery time from two days to six days and also increase cost,” read the letter.

“In such context, for smooth operation of the export and import activities, we urge the authorities to continue releasing imported goods from the Chattogram port instead of private ICDs,” said the exports platform.
