The Ministry of Commerce has undertaken a move to stabilise the prices of green chilli, which witnessed an upward trend in the last couple of days, by ensuring sufficient supply of it.

The price of green chilli has shot up from Tk 120 to Tk 200 in the capital’s kitchen markets in a week due to the supply crunch.

Meanwhile, the government has allowed the importers to import green chilli from India following the intervention by the commerce ministry.

According to the commerce ministry, the import from India has already begun through Bhomra and Sona Masjid inland port. Two trucks loaded with green chili already entered Bangladesh through Bhomra inland port on August 9 while another 12 trucks are on their way to come. J K Enterprise is the only importer of all these green chili.

Besides, another 650 tons of green chili will be imported on August 10 through the Sona Masjid inland port.

The ministry of commerce will continue the ongoing import until the domestic demand is met.

However, Bangladesh imports a huge amount of green chili from India to meet domestic demand each year.

Domestic production of green chili reduces during the rainy season and consequently the country fully depends on the import from neighboring India.

During the last year, green chili reached Tk 250 to the retailer end and it was the highest-ever price for green chili.
