BB pulls out Tk 1,000 crore in treasury bonds

The Bangladesh Bank on Tuesday pulled out Tk 1,000 crore against the banks’ bid of Tk 2,696 crore through five-year Bangladesh Government Treasury Bond Sale (Re-Issue) auction.

Bangladesh Bank Executive Director and Spokesperson Md Serajul Islam confirmed it to The Business Post on Tuesday.

The auction re-issued five-year treasury bonds issued on March 18, 2021. It will expire on March 18, 2026. The bonds have a face value of Tk 1,000 crore, said a press release of the central bank on Monday.

The re-issue of treasury bonds will be price-based, the central bank said in a press release.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Bank also pulled out Tk 2,605 crore from the banking sector on the first day of its auction on Monday through the BB bills.

According to Bangladesh Bank, there is a surplus liquidity of Tk 2,31,462 crore in the banking sector till June. Liquidity started to accumulate as the demand for loans remained low amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to officials, the central bank has not yet decided how much money will be withdrawn from the banking sector through the bills.
