The National Zoo at Mirpur in the capital has got two new tiger cubs – Durjoy and Obontika – born to their parents – Toggor and Belly on May 26.
A big surprise is awaiting the visitors by the time the zoo opens.
The two-and-a-half-month old cubs are very playful and active with their mother while their father has been kept apart for security reasons.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim officially named the baby tigers on Monday while visiting the zoo.
The minister said the government is working on a master plan to modernise the Dhaka Zoo to raise its standard to that of Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
“We have already appointed a consultant in this regard. The zoo animals will be kept like those in Safari park,” Rezaul pointed out.
He argued that infrastructure development has taken place inside the zoo while visitors wil enjoy an improved facility from now on. In a ward, a fully modern zoo is in the offing.
During the lockdown many animals have given to their offsprings in a clean environment. A number of deer had been sold as they were vastly outnumberd while some herons were released due to their increased breeding.
The minister released 16 birds yesterday while 230 more will be released on Tuesday.
The National Zoo Director and Curator Md Abdul Latif told The Business Post that the animals relished a long opportunity to find themselves in their own habitat during the pandemic when there were no visitors.
He said the zoo was closed from March 26, 2020 to November 2, 2020. Later it opened and again went into closure from April 2, 2021 to date due to coronavirus.
“Though the Cabinet Division announced that all tourism and amusement parks will be reopen from August 19, we have yet to receive any letter,” added Latif.
“Once we get it, we wil open the zoo as wer are all set to take the visitors by surprise.”
