Dhaka seeks to import fertiliser from Moscow

Bangladesh has shown interest in importing Di-Amonium Phosphate fertilizer from Russia and wants to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to this end.

Agriculture minister Dr Abdur Razzaque expressed his interest during a meeting with Russian Ambassador in Bangladesh Alexander Vikentyvich Mantytskiy his office in secretariat on Wednesday.

Bangladesh has been importing Muriat of Potash (MoP) fertiliser from Russia since 2013 under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement. Now, the country is eyeing to import Di-Amonium Phosphate (DAP) fertiliser from Russia under the same procedure.

“We are motivating farmers to increase the use of DAP. The government has reduced its price to Tk 16 from Tk 90. The usage of DAP is increasing day by day due to our initiatives to popularize this fertilizer among farmers,” the minister said.

Officials from the ministry of agriculture and the Russian embassy were present in the meeting, including Amitav Sarker, the chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC).

Moreover, Bangladesh requested the Russian ambassador to resume potato import from Bangladesh as standard quality potatoes are now being produced in the country.

In 2014, Russia stopped importing potato from Bangladesh after detecting brown rot, a bacterial disease in potato.

Abdur Razzak said, “Many initiatives have been taken by the government to keep potatoes bacteria-free. Now the country is producing high quality potato.”

The Russian ambassador assured the minister that they will consider that matter.

Besides, showing interest in Bangladeshi mangoes, the Russian envoy said, “Bangladeshi mangoes are very tasty and high quality and there is a huge potentiality of exporting them to Russia.”

Also during the meeting, the Russian ambassador gave assurance of helping Bangladesh to settle the Rohingya Issue.
