Bangladesh logs lowest Covid deaths in 52 days

Bangladesh reported 120 Covid-related deaths, which is the lowest in 52 days and 3,999 infections in a span of 24 hours till 8:00am on Saturday.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in a regular press release said, testing 23,882 samples in 728 laboratories across the country, they found positivity rate at 16.71 per cent, which is also lowest in more than two months.

Including the latest, the total deaths reached 25,143 and infection 14,57,194 since the country’s first identified Covid-19 positive case on March 8, 2020 and first death 10 days later.

To combat Covid-19, the government intermittently imposed lockdowns and strict restrictions on movement as the Delta variant of the virus surged in the country from May to August 1.

The government has withdrawn the nationwide lockdown from August 11 and is now trying to ensure mass vaccination.

Since Bangladesh launched a mass vaccination campaign, over 62.5 lakh people were vaccinated amid shortage of jabs, according to the DGHS.

Meanwhile, a consignment of 7,81,440 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine arrived in Bangladesh from Japan on Saturday.
