Govt to develop sanitation system in Thakurgaon

The Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives has taken up a project to develop a sanitation system and supply safe drinking water to new households in Thakurgaon municipality.

The project aims at supplying safe water through pipelines in the heartland of the municipality and developing the drainage management for proper sanitation.

It also aims at constructing a composite waste management system for recycling waste.  

In this regard, the ministry has sent the development project proposal to the Planning Commission for the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approval, a senior official of the Planning Ministry told The Business Post.

The cost of the project is estimated at Tk70.35 crore which will come from the government exchequer. The Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) will implement it by June 2023.

“As per the promise made by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her visit to Thakurgaon on March 29 in 2018 that drainage system, roads improvement and installation of overhead water tank for pure water supply in the municipality areas,” said Md. Abdullah-Al-Mustasim Billa, Deputy Chief of Physical Planning, Water Supply and Housing Wing-2 of the Physical Infrastructure Division.

“We have cleared the project at the project evaluation committee meeting and sent it to the ECNEC for approval. The planning minister has already approved the project,” he also said.

The main activities of the project include installation of a 20-kilometre water pipeline, two overhead water tanks, sinking of four water pump houses, construction of 13-km RCC drainage system, setting up of four public toilets and giving 2000 new water connections to households.

Thakurgaon town is a Grade-A municipality. At present, the municipality has eight water pump houses, 87-km water pipelines along with 10-km under-construction pipelines and 2672 water connections in the municipality area.
