Bangladesh has exported a total of 1,623 tonnes mangoes in the current fiscal year 2020-21, which is five times higher compared to the previous year.

Agriculture Minister Dr Muhammad Abdur Razzaque said this while addressing a national workshop – Improved management of mangoes to boost mango export – organised by Hortex Foundation at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) in Dhaka on Monday.

“Bangladesh produces around 25 lakh tonnes mangoes now. But, our mango export is only several hundred tonnes. We have to work to export 1 lakh tonnes mangoes each year. So, we have to communicate with our embassies in different countries, make a roadmap and find new markets,” he said.

In FY2019-20, around 25 lakh tonnes mangoes produced in the country, of which only 283 tonnes were exported.

He also asked Ministry of Agriculture officials and its departments to make specific roadmap and work-plan to export 1 lakh metric tonnes mangoes each year within the next three to five years.

“We are working to mitigate the barriers in exporting mangoes. We have already started to work to set up three vacuum heat treatment plants to ensure safe mangoes for export. The implementation of the better agriculture practice has started to keep safe mangoes from production to shipment. Phytosanitary certificates will be awarded soon,” he added.

According to the ministry, around 25 per cent mango get damaged during post collection stage each year incurring a loss of around Tk3,600 crore annually.
