Jute straw hits Bangladesh market

Go Green Bangladesh, an environment conservation group in Bangladesh, has introduced jute straw in a bid to stop the use of the single-use plastic straw to save and protect the environment of the country.

The jute straw, made from jute plants, has already hit the market and the eco-friendly straw can be used for both hot and cold beverages, said Go Green Bangladesh president Fazlur Rahman Raju on Tuesday.

“Jute straw is 100 per cent organic, reusable and disposable.”

Raju said. “The western countries use billions of single-use plastic straws each year. Also those countries are now looking for eco-friendly alternatives of plastic.”

“In most cases, alternatives to plastic straws are much costlier than plastic straws while the jute straw is the cheapest alternative among all,” he added.

Raju said, “Jute has been widely used as an alternative to plastic products in Bangladesh. After jute-made-bags and jute-made-polythene Sonali bags, now jute straw has been introduced as an alternative to plastic straw.”

According to the Go Green Bangladesh, jute straw can be the perfect alternative to plastic straws as it is quite cheaper than other eco-friendly alternatives and it is 100 per cent eco-friendly.

The organisation produces bamboo products including bamboo water bottles, straws, trays and chopping boards. Now the organisation turns its focus on jute with a new idea of producing jute straw.

As Bangladesh can produce billions of jute straw each year, they can sell these jute straws both locally and internationally, which can help local farmers financially. Bangladesh can also earn huge forex exporting jute straw, hoped Go Green Bangladesh.
