Bangladesh logs 88 Covid deaths, 3,436 new cases

Bangladesh reported 88 more deaths from Covid-19 along with 3,436 fresh infections in the last 24 hours till Thursday 8am.

Amid a steady decline in daily deaths, the country on Thursday also reported less than 100 deaths for the sixth consecutive day.

With the latest statistics, the total death toll hits 26,362 and infections to 15,07,116 since the country had recorded the first Covid infection on March 8, 2020, and death from the viral disease on March 18, same year.

The daily test positivity rate is 10.40 per cent and among the deceased, 54 are male and 34 are female patients, according to latest statistics of the Directorate General of Health Services.

A total of 33,025 samples have been tested during the reporting period across the country at 789 laboratories while Bangladesh had tested 89, 91,664 samples as of September 2.

DGHS press release also showed that infection positivity rate slightly increased to 10.40 per cent from Wednesday’s 10.11 per cent.

Health authorities reported the latest figures after testing 30,025 samples at 791 laboratories across the country.

Nationwide, another 5,901 people recovered from the illness, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,437,885.

Dhaka division registered the highest deaths, among the eight divisions, with 30 fatalities, followed by 27 in Chattogram, 10 in Sylhet, seven in Khulna, five in Rajshahi, three each in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Barishal.

Bangladesh to purchase 16.5 crore doses of vaccine

Health minister Zahid Maleque on Thursday said that Bangladesh has taken a policy decision to buy 16.5 crore doses of Covid vaccine.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health, the minister said that six crore doses will be collected from China and rest through the World Health Organisation under the Covax facility.

“China will supply two crore doses monthly from the next month,” said the minister while addressing a virtual event marking physical class resumption of medical students.

He also hoped that after getting these vaccines, academic activities would also resume as per the directive of prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
