Those who received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine as part of Bangladesh’s mass vaccination campaign will begin receiving their second doses starting Sept 7, says Directorate General of Health Services.

Addressing a weekly virtual health bulletin on Sunday, Directorate General of Health Services spokesperson Dr Md Shamsul Haque, however, categorically ruled out the possibility for the inoculation among the children between age 18 and 12 although the health minister himself had earlier announced to vaccinate all the school and college going children.

“Currently we have no plan to vaccinate the children aged between 12 and 18,” said Shamsul Haque, also line director of DGHS’s Maternal Neonatal Child and Adolescent Health.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh has reported 70 more Covid deaths and 2,430 cases in 24 hours in a span of 24-hour period till 8:00am on Sunday as the rate of detection dropped below 10 per cent for the second straight day, according DGHS.

The number of detected novel coronavirus cases rose to 1,514,456 while the death toll rose to 26,563, said a DGHS press release on Sunday.

However, both the numbers of daily deaths and cases witnessed an increase on Sunday as 61 deaths and 1,743 cases were reported on Saturday.

In Bangladesh, so far 26,563 people died of the virus and 15,14,456 people were infected with Covid-19.

During this period, the positivity rate dropped further to 9.66 per cent from Saturday’s 9.82 per cent, which was lowest in the last 3 months.

Health authorities reported the latest figures after testing 25,163 samples at 797 laboratories across the country.

The overall caseload now stands at 15,14,456 and the total fatalities at 26,563, since the country first detected Covid positive case on March 8, 2020 and first death on March 18, same year.

Meanwhile, 5,060 patients recovered from the deadly infection in the last 24-hours, raising the overall recovery to 14,51,063.

Among the fresh fatalities, 40 were males and 30 were females.

Dhaka division logged the highest deaths with 31 fatalities, followed by 20 in Chattogram, six in Sylhet, four in Rangpur, three each in Rajshahi and Khulna, two in Barishal and one in Mymensingh.

Bangladesh vaccinated over 38 lakh people aged above 35 from August 7 to 12 during a mass vaccination campaign.

However, the minister for Education Dr Dipu Moni after an inter-ministerial meeting on Sunday said

that educational institutions would start classes in person from September 12 as they had made the decision in this regard.

Students of class V, X and XII will attend class regularly while other students would do class a day in a week in order to maintain health guidelines.
