CID arrests fraud impersonatingIGP Benazir

The Criminal Investigation Department has arrested a computer engineer for impersonating the Inspector General of Police on mobile phones and apps to commit fraudulence.

Md Arif Mainuddin, 43, a computer engineering graduate and a former employee of a bank, was arrested at Hazaribagh in Dhaka on Monday along with four smartphones and five SIM cards used in acts of fraudulence, CID’s deputy inspector general (Dhaka Metro) Imam Hossain said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Imam Hossain said Arif, founder of online marriage media site marriage.com, used to indulge in fraudulence pretending to be IGP Benazir Ahmed and used his name, title, and photograph on caller ID identification app Truecaller, communication apps WhatApp and Gmail with a fake email address — [email protected].

“Arif used to call different commercial banks and officers there saw IGP’s name and photo on their phones and then he demanded different illegal benefits from the bankers.

He approached Mercantile Bank official Kamrul Islam on WhatsApp on August 29 and sought unethical financial benefits and threatened him of harm,” said Imam Hossain.

To hide his identity, Arif used to register the mobile phone SIM cards on others’ names, he said.

Imam Hossain said Arif confessed to his crimes during primary interrogation.

Arif completed a master’s in computer science from a private university in Dhaka and also worked for a private bank for some time, he said, when he lost the job at the bank, he took the illegal way to make money.

The police requested all to call police hotline 999 if anyone demands illegal benefits impersonating them the IGP or any government official.
