Need for green factories beyond RMG sector stressed

Speakers at a workshop on Friday underscored the need for green factories in other sectors beyond readymade garment industry for sustainable development of the country.

The workshop, titled ‘Role of green factory in sustainable business development’, was organised by Xclusive Can and Q Pail Limited in Gazipur.

The country’s more than 150 green factories in the RMG sector should be expanded in other sectors as well, they said in the workshop.

They also said the Bangladesh Bank and the National Board of Revenue (NBR) can play a vital role to set up green factories in the country.

The whole world is emphasizing on green business. So, the government should make policies for setting up green factories immediately in the country, they added.

Syed Nasir, managing director of Xclusive Can & Q Pail Limited, said, “Green industrialisation is very important and needed for sustainable development of the country. We don’t just have to look at the business side. We also have to think about the environment.”

“Country’s backward linkage industries are in jeopardy as 7 per cent tax has been introduced in the sector, which is unreasonable,” he added.

Among others, Shahanuare Shaid Shahin, deputy city editor of Daily Banikbarta, Amanullah Aman, adjunct faculty, Dhaka School of Economics, University of Dhaka and other journalists of different media houses were present in the workshop.
