Editors’ Council concerned over journalists’ bank account probe

The Editors’ Council has expressed concern over the probing of 11 senior journalists’ bank accounts.

“The council thinks that under the existing law, allegations against an individual can be investigated. But investigating bank accounts of 11 top leaders of a certain profession seems purposeful, which has never happened to any profession in the past,” the Council said a statement.

The council considers such incident as a threat to independent journalism in the country, it said.

On September 12, Bangladesh Bank’s Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) opened investigations into the bank accounts of the 11 journalists, including the president and general secretary of the National Press Club and leaders of four top journalist organisations.
