Strict action will be taken against rogue e-commerce companies like Evaly and e-Orange for fraud.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Additional Commissioner AKM Hafiz Akter said this at a press briefing on Saturday.
He said like Evaly and e-Orange, there are many more fraudulent e-traders that have cheated their customers out of their fortunes through deceptive means.
Allegations had it that they do not give products to the clients against their offers, and also sell products at a lower than the market price.
These matters are being investigated and action will be taken thereafter. Other law enforcement agencies are also working on this issue, said the lawman.
The police high-up reasoned that if more such phony e-commerce owners are nabbed, fraud rate will gradually decrease.
“We want that a beautiful e-commerce platform come back and spread across the country,” Hafiz Akter said.
Earlier on Thursday, Evaly CEO Mohammad Rassel and his wife Shamima Nasrin, also chairman, were detained from their Mohammadpur residence after a customer filed a fraud case against the duo with Gulshan Police Station that morning. They are on a three-day remand.
On the other hand, the owner of e-Orange has embezzled Tk 1,100 crore from customers. Later, police arrested three including e-Orange owner Sonia Mehjabin and her husband Masukur Rahman after a case filed against them with Gulshan Police Station. They are in jail now.
The two other accused including Bithi Akhter in the case are on the run. Banani Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Sohel Rana, who was associated with e-Orange, has been arrested from the Indo-Nepal border area for misappropriating customer’s money.
