Evaly’s Rassel put on fresh remand, Nasrin sent to jail

A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed Evaly chief executive officer Mohammad Rassel on one-day fresh remand in a case filed with Dhanmondi police station.

Besides, the court sent Rassel’s wife Shamima Nasrin, the chairman of the e-commerce company, to jail.

Additional chief metropolitan magistrate Hasibul Haque passed the orders when police produced them before the court with a seven-day remand plea.

Gulshan Police Station brought them to the court after the end of three days remand in a case filed over allegations of embezzling customers’ money.

As the defendant lawyers filed a bail petition, the state prosecution strongly opposed the bail plea.

Earlier on Friday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Atiqul Islam had granted a three-day remand to Rassel and his wife Shamima. The remand ended on Monday.

A customer of Evaly Arif Baker on Thursday lodged a case against the couple at Gulshan police station on allegation of embezzling money from the people.

A supplier, Kamrul Islam Chaklader filed another case against the couple as well as 25 more officials of the controversial e-commerce platform on allegation of embezzling Tk 36 lakh.

A section of buyers and sellers formed a human chain at the court premises demanding the release of Rassel and Shamima. The law enforcing members, however, later on dispersed them from the spot.

Addressing the human chain, the people said, “As the Evaly’s CEO Rassel wanted six months times to pay back our money, the general investors agreed to give him that time. But, the arrests of Rassel and his wife Shamima have cast uncertainty over the return of the investors’ money.”

“We think if Rassel is released and given the opportunity to do his own business, he would be able to pay back our invested money or the pending product,” they added.
