Transport ministry approves time extension, 11.57% project cost hike

The Road Transport and Bridges Ministry has approved the Roads and Highways Department’s proposals to extend the timeframe of Bhaluka-Gafargaon-Hossainpur road widening project and increase the cost by Tk 25.29 crore or 11.57 per cent.

The ministry has sent a revised development project proposal to the Planning Commission for approval, a senior Planning Ministry official told The Business Post on Sunday.

Planning Commission’s Project Evaluation Committee will hold a meeting on it, he said.

With the proposed hike, the ‘Widen and Improvement of Bhaluka-Gafargaon-Hossainpur Highways (1st Revision)’ project’s cost now stands at Tk 243.87 crore, which will come from the government exchequer. The RHD will complete the project by June next year.

Initially, the cost was estimated at Tk 218.58 crore and was scheduled to be completed by June this year.

RHD officials said the 45-kilometre road from Bhaluka to Hossainpur upazila under Kishoreganj would be widened for smooth transportation. It will have two parts – Bhaluka-Gafargaon Road and Gafargaon-Kishoreganj Road.

A Divisional Project Evaluation Committee meeting in June recommended completing the project within the proposed extended timeframe and suggested writing signs, signals, signboards and other instructions on the road in both Bangla and English.

According to the proposal, the road will have trees and drainage systems on both sides in line with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s directives.
