Planning Minister MA Mannan has urged all ministries, divisions and executing agencies to speedily implement their ongoing development projects within its stipulated time frame.

“We are not working to halt project proposals. We want projects to be completed fast. We want executing agencies to complete their project while ensuring quality,” the minister said on Monday.

He made the urge while addressing a workshop on “Capacity Building for Generating Gender Responsive Environmental Data in Focusing SDGs,” held at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital.

The workshop was jointly organised by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) in partnership with UN Women.

The minister, however, said there was no meaning in implementing projects by sacrificing the quality of work.

“The authority concerned should implement their projects in line with the rules and regulations,” he added.

He also said that the objective of different divisions under the Ministry of Planning was not to create obstacles for development project as the ministry does not want to delay the process of approving such projects, he added.

Noting that the country is yet to get rid of corruption fully, Mannan said that there is no reason to deny that and it is also the reality.

“But, we’re not disappointed yet and the pressure is on to curb corruption.”

Mannan said it is not possible to curb corruption through hustle or through military style. Rather the government would have to function within the purview of the law since none is above the law.

Mentioning that the government is aware enough of its own duties and responsibilities, he said that the government machineries are always prepared to discharge their concerned duties and responsibilities.

The planning minister noted that the global community widely acknowledges that Bangladesh is very much efficient in dealing with emergency situation like natural calamities and that efficiency should have to be replicated in the usual time also.

Mannan said that the ruling government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has been working to develop the country.

The programme was chaired by BBS Statistics and Information Management Division Secretary Muhammad Yamin Chowdhury.

Rafiqul Islam, project director of Strengthening Environment, Climate Change and Disaster Statistics Project, presented the keynote paper at the workshop.

Department of Women Affairs Director General Ram Chandra Das and Department of Disaster Management Director General Md Atiqul Huq spoke on the occasion as special guests.

Addressing the workshop, Mohammad Atiqul Haque said accurate data collection would play a role in increasing capacity of the government.

“We have introduced rescue boats for the disaster management. A dockyard is being constructed in Narayanganj. Special arrangements have been made for the disabled, children and women,” he added.
