The workers and staff of Opex & Sinha Textile Group in Narayanganj’s Kanchpur have sought the intervention of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association for their outstanding wages.

The letter, addressed to the BGMEA president, said the workers had not been paid for three months. Some of them, who left the company, are yet to receive their pays.

They said the company authorities have not been paying them properly for the last several years.

Workers claimed that the Industrial Police used violence against them when they demanded salaries. They feared that the company would not pay their wages despite agreeing to do so several times before.

The letter said 12,500 workers and their families would be in trouble if they are not paid soon. They sought the BGEMA’s intervention and demanded the organisation to take action.

Bangladesh is the second-largest exporter of readymade garment products after China. The sector employs an estimated four million people, mostly women. The workers are often poorly paid.
