Ctg ICD workers call off strike, rejoin work

Transport workers of KDS Logistics, a private inland container depot (ICD) in Chattogram, have withdrawn a six-day strike and returned to work‍ as they have been assured that they will be given proper appointment letters.

Ahsanul Kabir, executive director of KDS Logistics, said container transport to the Chattogram port from the ICD had resumed as workers had rejoined work on Tuesday night.

He said workers would receive proper appointment letters within 45 days.

Mohammad Main Uddin, general secretary of the Chattogram Prime Mover and Trailer Workers Union, said an agreement between workers and the company had been signed to issue proper appointment letters within 45 days.

Officials of various government agencies, including the chairman of the Chattogram port, had assured workers that their demand would be met and the latter then rejoined work, he said.

KDS Logistics, which deals with a significant part of readymade garment (RMG) exports, is one of the major private ICDs affiliated with the Chattogram port.

As many as 400 transport workers of the ICD went on strike on September 30, demanding they be given appointment letters from their employer instead of another company.

They had been given appointment letters from Allied Express Shipping, a sister concern of KDS Logistics. But they said KDS Logistics is not affiliated with the company.

About 600 containers of RMG export goods could not be shipped due to the strike as ships left the port without those.

Organisations of transport and other workers in Chattogram expressed solidarity with KDS Logistics workers during the strike.

There are 19 ICDs that deal with the customs clearance and other processes related to exports and some imports at the Chattogram port.

The chairman of the port and officials of various government agencies met the strikers on Monday night and promised that their demands would be met.

At the meeting, the workers decided to call off the strike on the condition of receiving proper appointment letters.
