Fertiliser-laden vessel sinks in Pasur channel of Mongla port

A cargo vessel carrying 850 metric tonnes of fertiliser sank near the Harbaria-14 anchorage of Pasur River after getting stuck in a shoal on Friday.

Cargo ship MV Deshbandhu began its journey in the early hours of Thursday from the Harbaria-14 anchorage for Jashore’s Nawapara with a cargo of Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) fertiliser, said the vessel’s Master Riyad Ali.

During the journey, the vessel got stuck in a shoal between Pasur Channel’s Chila and Kainmari area around Friday afternoon and began to sink due to a broken keel, said Abul Hasan Babul, joint general secretary of Bangladesh Launch Labour Association’s Mongla branch.

“The ship had ten sailors on board, and they were able to swim ashore safely. We are planning to file a general diary (GD) in this regard,” Master Riyad told the Business Post.

Providing more details, Harbour Master and Acting Secretary of Mongla Port Authority Sheikh Fakhruddin said, “We have sent officials from the Mongla Port Authority to inspect the scene of the incident. We will take necessary measures as soon as they get back and submit a report.”

The main channel of the port is safe, and the ship sank outside the Pasur channel, he added.
