‘Delta Plan for public facilities in villages, cities’

Local Government Minister Md Tazul Islam on Wednesday said the government had adopted the Delta Plan 2100 to tackle flood, river erosion and other natural calamities to ensure better public facilities in cities and rural areas.

“The Delta Plan will be a key feature of the country’s future development,” the minister said at ‘Delta Plan 2100: Involvement of Local Government Institutions’ programme held at a city hotel organised by DeltaCap, a niche project helping develop capacity and skills for Bangladesh to implement its Delta Plan 2100.

He asked the experts concerned to address the obstacles in implementing the plan.

“The government is putting equal emphasis on the development of the village and urban areas of the country,” he said.

Tazul said that after successfully achieving the targets of Millennium Development Goals, the government was working for meeting the targets of Sustainable Development Goals.

He noted that natural disasters force many people to migrate to cities or towns from villages making urban life, especially in the capital, uncomfortable.

The minister said that the government has adopted a plan for a balanced development of villages and cities to check migration.

Abul Kalam Azad, Special Envoy of the Climate Vulnerable Forum Presidency of Bangladesh, chaired the event where Local Government Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed and Netherlands head of Mission in Bangladesh Anne van Leeuwen spoke, among others.
