19 companies to get President’s Award for Industrial Development

Nineteen companies will receive the President’s Industrial Development Award 2019 today for their contributions in employment generation, and for supporting the development of Bangladesh’s economy and commercial sector.

The Ministry of Industries will formally hand over the crests and certificates to the winners at a ceremony in Dhaka’s Osmani Memorial Auditorium. President Abdul Hamid is set to attend the event virtually as the chief guest.

Making the announcement at a press conference on Wednesday, Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said, the award ceremony was set to be held in 2020, but it was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Many Bangladeshi companies are currently doing well in the global market. Their contribution to the country’s economy is significant, and we want their position to be stronger,” he added.

State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder and Industries Secretary Zakia Sultana also attended the briefing. The government gives this award to 18 industrial establishments each year according to the classification of industrial establishments.

But for 2019, two different sets of companies jointly won in two separate categories, and there is no third place winner in the cottage industry category. So, nineteen firms are getting awarded on Thursday, said industry secretary Zakia Sultana.

Among the winners, four are from the large industries category, four are under medium, three small, three micro, two cottages and three hi-tech. They scored the highest under a 100-point evaluation system formulated by a special committee.

Points were awarded based on annual turnover, regular revenue deposit, domestic raw material use, export income and production of import alternatives and labour training, welfare measures, employment generation, social responsibility, worker safety, environmental protection, new innovation, product quality, efficient organisational management, quality control laboratory, and development and research.

BRB Cable Industries and British American Tobacco Bangladesh jointly took the top spot under the large industry category, followed by Mir Ceramic in second position and Jaber & Jobayer Fabrics in third.

From among medium industries, Bengal Polymer Wares became first, Noman Terry Towel Mills second, and Auko-Tex and Crimson Rosella Sea food jointly ranked third.

Under the small industry category, Promi Agro Foods took the lead followed by Madhobdi Dyeing Finishing Mills and APS Holding. 

Moscow Dairy Enterprise secured first position among micro-industry category with Khan Bakelite Products and Raven Agro Chemicals following suit. CORR-The Loot Works secured first position in cottage industry category, Samsunnahar Textile Mills second. 

In the high-tech industry, Walton Hi-Tech Industries was selected for the first position, Information Technology Consultants Second and Summit Communications was third place in this category. 

To encourage entrepreneurship and creativity in the private sector, the “Guidelines for Awarding the President’s Industrial Development Award 2013” was formed in 2013. Then in 2015, for the first time, the best 12 industrial entrepreneurs were awarded.

The Ministry of Industries is now set to present the “President’s Award for Industrial Development 2019,” which will be its fifth iteration.

Bangladesh presently has around 1.25 lakh small scale industries and about 6 lakh cottage industries. These sectors provide employment to about 38 lakh people. Besides, about 1 million SME industries have been set up in the country so far.

These SMEs are contributing 23 per cent to the GDP, and provide 80 per cent to the industrial jobs, data from the industries ministry shows.
