US to send 14m Pfizer vaccine to Bangladesh

The United States administration has declared to send another 14 million Pfizer vaccine for Bangladesh under the COVAX facility, a platform to ensure coronavirus vaccination in all countries on a fair basis.

The decision was made at high-level ministerial virtual meeting on Covid-19 and beyond moderated by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen and 25 other foreign ministers also participated at the meeting.

The Dr Momen said that Bangladesh has distributed 78 million doses among the people while 46m received the first dose and 32m the 2nd dose, said a press statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The country still needs more doses to vaccinate at least 80% of 165m people”, the FM added.

Covid-19 vaccines should be made public after ensuring affordability to all countries, the minister insisted during the meeting.

“Good news is, infection rate in Bangladesh now is around 1 percent and yesterday 2 died and day before yesterday only one died of Covid-19.”, he added.
