NBR to observe VAT Day, VAT Week in Dec

The National Board of Revenue will observe the VAT Day and VAT Week-2021 in the capital and other divisional cities next month although it could not even hold this year’s income tax fair because of the pandemic.

As the Covid-19 cases in the country drops significantly, the revenue board has chalked out various programmes to hold the National VAT Day on December 10 and the National VAT Week from December 10-15 as per earlier schedule.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal is expected to be the chief guest at the VAT day programme on December 10.

The decision was made at a meeting of the Central Steering Committee formed on the occasion of VAT Day and VAT Week celebrations. Several other decisions were also made at the meeting chaired by NBR chairman Abu Hena Md. Rahmatul Muneem. The meeting was held in the first week of November.

The other decisions of the meeting include-as Covid situation has become somewhat normal, VAT day will be held in a limited scale, with the approval of the finance minister, the chief guest of the VAT Day will be selected. The president of FBCCI and other stakeholders will be the special guests, the main event of the VAT Day will be held at the conference room of the NBR or in a convenient place instead of hotel Pan Pacific Sonargaon in the capital, the highest tax paying individuals and organizations would be given honour in the production, services and business sectors while awareness TVC will also be launched to encourage people to pay their VAT.

Confirming the matter, NBR member (VAT Implementation & IT) Abdul Mannan Sikder told The Business Post that VAT day would be observed in limited scale while VAT Week will be observed in all the VAT commissionerates.

“Further information will be provided through a formal press conference, which is to be held soon,” he added.

Earlier, due to the pandemic, NBR decided not to hold the income tax fair this year like the previous year. However, the authorities decided to provide services to the taxpayers throughout the month of November through its zonal offices.
