Bangladeshi seed producer Lal Teer Seed Ltd has made room among the top ten lists in the Access to Seeds Index 20201.
The index published by the United Nations Foundation and the World Benchmarking Alliance showed Lal Teer Seed Ltd securing the seventh position among the top ten companies in its South and Southeast Asian regional list.
The index is also published for two other regions – Western and Central Africa and Eastern and Southern Africa.
In the regionally prepared list, features two companies from Bangladesh in the top 31 countries.
After a two-year interval, the index is published this year.
Six indicators –capacity building, marketing and sales, seed production, research and development, genetic resource and intellectual property management, good governance and strategy – are considered for preparing the list.
Lal Teer Seed Ltd scored 59.2 in 100 based on the six indicators.
Lal Teer Seed Ltd Managing Director Mahbub Anam said, “This position of Lal Teer Seed as a Bangladeshi company in the seed index is definitely a source of pride. It is a recognition of the contribution Lal Teer has made to the development of the country’s seed industry over the past few decades. Farmers’ confidence will be established for the Lal Teer to be able to represent the country globally.”
“Lal Teer Seed is working on innovation, research and extension for good seeds in the country,” he added.
Lal Teer began its journey as a joint-venture in 1995 with the name East-West Seed Bangladesh Limited. It was renamed Lal Teer Seed Ltd in 2007.
Lal Teer Seed has a reputation in the country as a proponent of vegetable seeds. Lal Teer Seed has been conducting production and marketing activities of paddy seeds since 2010.
