Prices of vegetables remain high
A vegetable trader in Karwan Bazar is haggling with a customer over high prices as the kitchen market in Dhaka shows no sign of colling down – Shamsul Haque Ripon

Vegetable prices showed no sign of cooling down in Dhaka even as winter crops started hitting the markets.

On Friday, prices of some vegetables increased by as much as Tk 20 per kg compared to the last week. Only a small number of vegetables were available for less than Tk 50 per kg.

Brinjal and ladies finger prices rose Tk 10 per kg, while that of tomato jumped by as much as Tk 20. It was selling for Tk 150-160.

A kg bean cost Tk 55-60, green chilli Tk 80–100, pumpkin Tk 35-40, white radish Tk 30-40, bitter melon Tk 60, cucumber Tk 40 and green papaya Tk 25-30 at kitchen markets in the capital.

On the other hand, a piece of cauliflower cost Tk 40-50 and cabbage Tk 40.

Onion prices remained unchanged over the last couple of weeks. Each kilogram of the local variety cost Tk 60-65, while the Indian one was sold for Tk 50 on Friday.

Meanwhile, broiler chicken prices remained steady at Tk 145-150 a kg from last week. But the Sonali variety was sold at Tk 270-280 per kg, compared to Tk 265-270 a week ago. Last month, its price had shot up to Tk 310-320.
