The winter edition of five-day-long REHAB Fair 2021 has begun on Thursday in Bangabandhu International Conference Centre after two years with low turnout and lack of festive mood.

The realtors said there were few visitors than what they expected on the very first day (yesterday).

Talking to The Business Post, Assistant General Manager (Sales) of Sheltech (Pvt) Ltd Saydul Mazid said their company is one of the pioneers in the Real Estate and Housing Industry of Bangladesh, and is famous for housing apartment and commercial space.

“We got few visitors on the first day (Thursday) up to evening. Though the fair is being held after two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we hope we will get good response in the days to come,” he added.

“Generally, around 30-35 apartment units are sold every year in a fair. We hope we can make such a sale this time either.”

The sales manager posits that they are getting good response for their condominium flats at Mirpur and Uttar Badda which are priced at Tk 6,950 per square feet.

“We did not face the Covid-19 impact severely as we had available ready flats. The apartments in Kolabagn, Malibag, Mirpur, Uttara and Bananiare sell a lot. The apartments priced at between Tk 6950 and Tk 16,800 per square feet are of high demand,” according to Mazid.

Businessman Mizanur Rahman who came to fair from old Dhaka said he wants to know about the apartment price.

“I would like to purchase a flat of medium size. Visiting several stalls, I have been able to get an idea about apartment prices,” he added.

On Thursday noon, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi inaugurated the five-day REHAB Fair-2021 while Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) Chairman ABM Amin Ullah Nuri, Secretary to the Ministry of Housing and Public Works Md Shahid Ullah Khandaker, Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh president Alamgir Shamsul Alamin, among others, were present on the occasion.

The minister urged the realtors not to cheat customers.

“We receive many complaints against realtors that they take money from consumers but do not hand over apartments properly or timely. We hope that won’t happen anymore,” he said.

Realtors have been playing a significant role in building a planned city. The DAP (Detailed Area Plan) policy should be finalised soon through discussion with all parties concerned. All backward linkage sectors will be affected if the real estate sector is affected, he pointed out.

Expressing frustration over the DAP, REHAB president Alamgir Shamsul Alamin said the real estate sector has to be prioritised as Bangladesh is marching on. The government should think about general people and businessmen before forming any policy.

“We have 269 sub-sectors and are contributing 15 per cent to GDP. So, DAP should be finalised maintaining consistency,” he suggested.

FBCCI president Md Jashim Uddin urged the authorities concerned to send a draft copy of the Detailed Area Plan to the federation.

“Bangladesh is going to attain LDC graduation and the country will achieve development status by 2041. So we have to align with various policies and think about building cities like Dubai and London,” he maintained.

“The government has taken initiative to establish 101 economic zones. One zone should be for housing where foreigners will be eager to live. Our export will reach $ 300 billion in 2041 and we have to develop our infrastructure accordingly.”

In his address, RAJUK Chairman ABM Amin Ullah Nuri said they would finalise the DAP after discussion with all parties. “We do all things to build a planned and environmentally friendly city,” he argued.
