The fourth phase election to 836 union parishads and three municipalities across the country ended on Sunday.

The polls started from 8:00am and continued till 4:00pm without any break.

According to the Election Commission, 38 union parishads and three municipalities conducted polls through electronic voting machine and the other UPs held polls through ballot paper. Monitoring cells have also been made to observe the overall situation of the election.

A total of 3,814 candidates were running for chairman posts, 9,513 for reserved member seats for women and 30,106 for member posts, the EC added.

The fifth phase of polls will be held on January 5 in 707 UPs and the sixth phase on January 31 in 219 UPs.

The first, second, and third phases of UP elections were marred by violence and irregularities, UNB reports.

Three people were killed and a number of people were injured in the first phase of UP election that concluded with reports of sporadic violence and clashes on September 20.

At least six people were killed and over 100 others injured in the second phase of the union parishad elections held on November 11.

Two people were killed and a number of people injured in the third phase of the UP elections held on November 28.
