The Unique Group – one of the largest conglomerates and foremost diversified business entities in Bangladesh – is building a 1000-bed hospital in the Churain area of Nawabganj under the Dhaka district.

Its Managing Director Mohd. Noor Ali and Diabetic Association of Bangladesh’s President Prof AK Azad Khan laid the foundation stone of the facility during a ceremony on Friday with the name “Salina Noor and BADAS Foundation Multicomplex Medical Establishment.”

Salina Noor serves as the Unique Group’s chairperson, and the company had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with BADAS Foundation in this regard on January 3.

The facility will deliver world-class medical treatment at the people’s doorstep, and will feature 1,000 general beds, a 200-bed cancer institute, medical college, diabetic institute, postgraduate nursing college and institute, dormitory for doctors, nurses and students, English medium school (up to 12th grade), and a playground.

The whole country, including thousands of people from Dohar, Nawabganj and Sreenagar upazilas, will have access to a range of healthcare services once the facility is completed.

At the ceremony, Mohd. Noor Ali said, “Though there are many hospitals and healthcare projects currently exists in Bangladesh, our project will be unique and one of the best in the country.

“I am hopeful that patients will visit this hospital from abroad to get proper cancer treatment.”

He continued, “The 1000-bed hospital will provide all kinds of treatment. Patients will be able to get medical aid at the hospital’s outdoor department in three years, and the establishment will be completed within the next eight years.

“This will be a one-stop facility, which will meet the needs of patients, doctors, nurses and students.”

Giving an example, Mohd. Noor Ali said, “Bangladeshi people are going to India, Thailand, and Singapore to get modern medical treatment. But if we provide quality treatment here, foreigners will come to us.

“People from Malaysia used to visit Bangladesh to get a degree from Dhaka University, but now, Bangladeshis go to Malaysia for the same reason.”

He further said, “Doctors, nurses or other officials should not worry about ensuring quality education for their children. Considering this, we are building an English medium school for students up to 12th grade. This rural area will turn into a city.

“I want to repay my birthplace Kamarkhola and Churain where I spent my childhood. I want the whole country to come visit my birthplace, as Churain will be one of the best healthcare facilities in Bangladesh.”

We will not waste any time, because I want to witness this healthcare project come to fruition during my lifetime, Mohd. Noor Ali said.

Addressing the event, BADAS Foundation’s President Prof Dr AK Azad Khan said, “This area is not far away from the capital city of Dhaka, and is it a beautiful and perfect place for building a healthcare complex.

“The countrywide network of BADAS will connect with this facility to expand treatment to the people. I believe that patients from abroad will visit this establishment if we can provide advanced treatment.”

He continued, “Many countries – especially the developed ones – are looking for more nurses, and Bangladesh will be able to send nurses to those countries if we can train them. We will be able train skilled nurses at this facility.

Former Ganaparishad member freedom fighter Abu Mohammad Subid Ali Tipu, Unique Group Adviser Khandaker Shawkat Hossain, Joint Secretary of Government Selim Khan, freedom fighter Roichuddin Bacchu, Upazila Chairman Nashiruddin Ahmed Jhilu, Nawabganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Salauddin Manju were present at the programme among many others.
