BB sets Tk28,000 entry level salary for bankers

The Bangladesh Bank has set Tk28,000 as the entry level salary for bank officers in a bid to curb pay disparity among bankers.

Entry level employees – including assistant officers, trainee assistant officers or trainee assistant cash officers – will get this minimum amount during their probation period, according to a central bank notice on Thursday.

The entry level salary for bank officers will start from Tk 39,000 after the probation period, the notice read, adding that following implementation of this move on March 1, banks will have to readjust existing salaries and allowances of bank officers working in above mentioned positions.

It stated that banks will not be allowed to reduce the existing salary of its officers and staff who are already getting more compared to the new pay structure, and the difference between salaries of bank CEOs and other officers should be at a reasonable level.

The regulator said no bank officials can be forced to resign without any specific and proven allegations, and banks will not be allowed to use deposit mobilisation targets as a condition for job security and increments. It also set Tk24,000 as the minimum salary and allowance for the support staff of banks.

The Bangladesh Bank said these guidelines will not be applicable to state-owned banks as the pay structure of such banks is determined to be covered or followed by the national pay scale issued by the government.

Moreover, the new salary structure will not be applicable to staff providing agent banking, mobile banking or any similar services at various bank outlets, read the central bank notice.

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, a number of banks had asked their employees to resign as part of its efforts to reduce the operational costs and restructure operations, which prompted the central bank to issue this notice.
