Bangladesh climbs 6 notches on global peace index

Bangladesh has significantly improved its position in peace and stability in 2021, making a six-step jump from the previous year, according to a recent global index.

In the latest edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2021, published by the Institute of Economics and Peace, Bangladesh was ranked 91, up from 97 in 2020.

The index, which is the 15th edition of GPI, ranked 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness.

Similarly, GPI 2021 ranked India at 112, Pakistan 150, Afghanistan 163, Sri Lanka 95, Myanmar 131.

Only Bhutan and Nepal surpassed Bangladesh on the index, ranking 22 and 85 respectively. Iceland topped the index, followed by New Zealand and Denmark. while the US, UK and Russia stood at 122, 33 and 154 respectively.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan, Yemen, and Syria ranked lowest on the index. Yemen ranked 162 and Syria 161.
