The Bangladesh Railway has signed a deal worth Tk 231.19 crore with an Indian company to procure 420 broad-gauge wagons.

Hindustan Engineering and Industries limited, an Indian Company, will supply the wagons to the railway authorities in 27 months.

The contract was signed under the project titled “Rolling Stock Operation Improvement Project” of Bangladesh Railway.

Asian Development Bank and the government of Bangladesh are financing the project.

Mizanur Rahman, project director, Bangladesh Railway, and Pradip Guha, vice-president (marketing) at Hindustan Engineering and Industries Ltd, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisations.

The wagons will have stainless steel body capable to run in high speed with automatic hydraulic break system. Apart from normal transportation, specialised products such as food corn, fertilizer, stone, and wood can be carried by the wagons.

It will take shorter time and ensure lower cost of commodity transportation, the railway ministry said in a press release issued on February 6.

Railway Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujon was present in the agreement signing ceremony.

“Initiatives have been taken to boost both regional rail connectivity with neighbouring countries and domestic rail operation. River and marine ports are being connected,” Sujon said.
