Advancing digitization in agriculture to achieve food security by overcoming the impacts of climate change was given the top priority at the United Nations’ FAO conference, said Agriculture Minister Mohammad Abdur Razzaque on Thursday.
Bangladesh is hosting the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) 36th regional conference for the first time, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina virtually launched the conference’s ministerial-level meeting on the day.
Minister Razzaque was briefing the media on the third day of the conference at the InterContinental Dhaka.
“Bangladesh is focusing on three things right now—mechanization, commercialization, and agro-processing, which include the application of technology across the farming industry, from production to distribution,” the minister said.
“At each stage of the post-production value chain, technology assets can play a key role,” the minister added.
“FAO has to raise more funds so that new climate-resilient crop varieties and technologies may be developed. There must also be the exchange of cutting-edge technologies among the 46 FAO member states,” the minister also added.
Speaking at the event, Climate Change Minister Sahab Uddin said: “Climate change is creating obstacle to achieving self-sufficiency in food.
For this, tackling climate change impact is being prioritized in the conference. This conference will help us achieve the target of becoming self-sufficient in food production.”
The meeting was attended by agriculture ministers, secretaries, and officials from other public and commercial organizations from 46 member countries.
