After gas, BERC now eyes electricity price hike

The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) is going to hold a public hearing to increase the wholesale electricity price that consumers and stakeholders fear it will only add burden on them.

The public hearing will be held on May 18 in the capital, according to a statement from the commission on Sunday.

The energy regulatory body has also requested the stakeholders concerned to send their written statements and opinions to the commission in this regard by April 28.

The fresh move of BERC comes weeks after the commission held another public hearing on the gas price hike.

The press release said, according to the BERC Act-2003, Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has submitted an application to the commission with a proposal to change the bulk (wholesale) tariff of electricity.

The technical evaluation team of the commission has also recommended further action.

Earlier on March 21-24, the BERC held a hearing on a proposal to hike transmission charges, including wholesale and retail prices of gas.

In January, during a discussion on gas prices, BPDB proposed to increase the electricity price.

They said if the gas price is increased by 10 per cent, they will incur losses. Under the circumstances, they would have to raise prices.

During the gas price hearing, BERC’s technical committee recommended a 20 per cent hike in gas prices. The commission will issue an order on gas prices within 90 days from the date of the hearing.

Earlier in February 2020, the wholesale and retail prices of electricity were increased.
