The Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) has given its final nod to Comilla Economic Zone as the country’s 12th private economic zone.
The entire operation of the economic zone will be under the guidance of the country’s leading business organization Meghna Group of Industries Ltd.
The handing over ceremony was held at Hotel InterContinental in the capital on Sunday.
Some $2 billion investment is expected in the zone. The successful implementation of the zone will create employment opportunities for about 50,000 people, according to the company sources.
Md. Tofazzel Hossain Miah, senior secretary of Prime Minister Office attended the ceremony as the chief guest while Major General Abul Kalam Mohammad Ziaur Rahman, BEPZA Executive Chairman and Mostafa Kamal, chairman of Meghna Group of Industries were the special guests.

The Comilla Economic Zone, beside Dhaka-Chittagong highway, covers an area of about 250 acres in Meghna upazila of Comilla district, which will be expanded to 350 acres in the future. Meghna Group of Industries is the promoter of the economic zone.
According to the plan, factories and administrative buildings, warehouses, logistics areas, water and waste treatment plants, roads and other necessary facilities will be constructed to make the economic zone a self-sufficient zone. There will also be greening, health care and training centres. Environmentally friendly technology will be used so that there is no harmful effect on the environment.
BEZA started commercial production from various private economic zones with final licenses. A total of 26 industrial establishments are in production in these areas and 23 industrial establishments are under construction. About 3.2 billion investment and 35,000 jobs have been created in these economic zones. From these industries, various products including cement, edible oil, bags, paper, tissue, toys, beverages and food items are being exported in the global market.
