Panjabi sale picks up ahead of Eid

Eid joy is amplified during cloth shopping and the traditional ‘Panjabi’ remains on the top in the list of favourites among the young generation during the largest religious festival in the country.

Panjabi is as essential to a 60-year-old as it is to toddlers during the Eid festival.  Like every year, centring Eid-ul-Fitr, Panjabi shops, decorated with a colourful look, have been seeing sales continue to pick up throughout the month of Holy Ramadan.

Different types of Panjabis with verities of designs are available in shopping malls and markets ahead of Eid while Indian Panjabi and cotton Panjabi are most popular among the buyers. Panjabi are sold during all kinds of festivals but Eid brings special demands.

After visiting different shops, The Business Post correspondent found that Indian Panjabi is sold at Tk 1,500 to Tk 6,000, sherwani at Tk 4,000 to Tk 15,000, short Panjabi at Tk 1,400 to Tk 3,000. Besides, local brands also have different Panjabi at different price ranges between Tk 1,200 to Tk 6,000.

Miraj Hossain, owner of Sharif Collection in Bashundhara City Shopping Complex, said they have brought Panjabi from popular brand shops in India which are not available in other city markets except Jamuna Future Park.

“We have different types of Panjab. Cotton, print and Indian silk Panjabi are sold in large numbers,” he said.

Bappi, owner of ‘Nil Pori’ showroom in Jamuna Future Park Market told the Business Post that they bought Indian Panjabi centring the upcoming Eid but the price is slightly high this year compared to the previous year.

Unwilling to be named, the salesman of local clothing brand ‘Sailor’ in Dhanmondi, said every year they showcase Pajabi with new designs. Senior Admin Manager Ataur Rahman of ‘Deshi Dosh’, an alliance of country’s top ten fashion houses, said “All our products are for upholding local culture and tradition. So the platform was named Deshi Dosh.” 

They sell Panjabi targeting different festivals and their designs and collections are quite unique from other fashion houses, he said adding that, “Hopefully the sell will be satisfactory this year as in past years.”

Besides, Aziz Co-Operative Super Market at Shahbagh is popular for cotton Panjabi. Every year cotton Panjabi are sent to different regions of the country from this market. The market houses a large numbers of locals brands like Gram Banglar Mela, Deshia, Easy, Samikaran, Nongor, Megh, Deshal and Boron. The number of shoppers is growing every day to buy cotton Panjabi with colourful thread works there.

Mitu Begum, who came to shop at Aziz Supermarket from the Kakrail area of the city, said that she prefers this market as it has a large number of varieties of cotton Panjabi in one place with reasonable price and standard quality which is rare in other markets.

Bahalul Ahmed Fahim, owner of ‘BJ Point’ fashion house at Aziz Super Market, said “Our Panjabi are quite famous in this market. We send our Panjabi to different districts across the country.”

“Hopefully, we will be able to recover from economic distress inflicted by the Covid-19 pandemic with adequate sell during this Eid.”, he hoped.
