At least 11 people have died in floods and mudslides triggered by heavy rains in India’s remote northeast region which also inundated and damaged tracks and bridges in the district.

The Haflong railway station in Assam’s Dima Hasao district has been completely flooded due to heavy rains and landslides. Images and videos circulated on the internet showed that tracks were inundated.

Trains parked at the station have also been overturned due to the flow of floodwater.

Seventeen trains have been cancelled or partially cancelled in the district as flooding and landslides damaged tracks and bridges at 26 locations.

A food crisis looms over Mizoram and Tripura besides south Assam as the movement of trains continued to remain shut in the Lumding-Badarpur hill section of NF Railway’s Lumding division.

The Army and the Indian Air Force carried out rescue operations after many passengers were left stranded, Northeast Now reported.

Flooding and landslides in several areas in Assam have disrupted normal life.

About 1.97 lakh people in about 20 districts of the state have been affected by the floods. Due to incessant rains in Assam and neighbouring states of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh over the past few days, the water level in the rivers is rising and the Kopili river is flowing above the danger mark.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority report, 51,357 people have been affected in Cachar alone.

The first flood of the year has affected 652 villages in 46 revenue divisions and 16,645.61 hectares of cropland have been destroyed by the floodwaters.

In Assam, disturbing pictures of floods have emerged from different areas due to incessant rains. In Assam, a flood situation has been created due to rain in Nagaon.

In many areas of Kampur in Nagaon, water is visible all around after the rains. To help the flood-affected areas, the government has deployed the Indian Army, paramilitary forces, fire and emergency services, SDRF, civil administration and trained volunteers to rescue the people.

People are being evacuated from the flood-affected areas and taken to relief camps.
