Gold price at record Tk 82,465

Jewellers have increased gold price by Tk 4,200 per bhori, taking the price of a bhori of 22 carat gold to Tk 82,465 — the highest ever in the country’s history.

Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) announced the latest hike in all types of gold prices on Saturday after the rates went up in the international and local bullion markets.

The revised prices — the second time this month alone — will be effective from Sunday until further notice, said a BAJUS press release.

It said one bhori (or 11.664gm) of 22 carat gold will go up to Tk 82,465 from Tk 78,265. The 21 carat gold in the local market will now cost Tk 78,732 per bhori, which is Tk 4,025 higher than the previous Tk 74,707.

The 18 carat gold will cost Tk 67,535 per bhori, which is Tk 3,500 higher than the previous Tk 64,035. Also, the price for traditional method gold will be Tk 56,220 per bhori, which is Tk 2,858 up from Tk 53,362.

The new rates are based on the rising gold prices in the bullion market as well as the rise in the value of the dollar and other currencies caused by the global economic crisis, said the press release.

However, BAJUS has kept the rates of silver unchanged. The price of 22 carat silver will remain at Tk 1,516 per bhori, while 21 and 18 carat silver will still be available at Tk 1,435 and Tk 1,225, respectively.

On May 18, the price of 22 carat gold had risen by Tk 1,750 to Tk 78,265 per bhori.

Before that, on May 10, the gold prices had fallen by Tk 1,166 per bhori — taking the prices of 22, 21 and 18 carat gold to Tk 76,515, Tk 73,016 and Tk 62,635, respectively — in the local market.
