Life in Ctg comes to standstill

Life in Chattogram, the main port city of the country, has come to a standstill due to continuous rains.

Four lives have been lost in separate landslides while many were taken to temporary shelters run by the district administration.

The Chittagong port, the main gateway of the country’s import-export activities, has also come to a standstill for the second day in a row due to rains.

At least four people were killed and 10 others injured in landslides in Akbar Shah and Foy’s Lake areas of Chattogram on early Saturday. The landslides took place in Barisal Ghona area under Akbar Shah Police Station around 1 am and in Bijoy Nagar area of Foy’s Lake around 3 pm.

Hundreds of families have been evacuated anticipating further landslides due to incessant rains, said Chittagong Additional Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Mahmud Ullah Maruf. He said, “The families have been sheltered in five schools, which was declared as temporary shelters and have been provided with necessary food, drink, and medicine.”

However, the district administration could not confirm exactly how many families have been brought to the shelter till this report was filed.

Due to the rains, water has accumulated in many low-lying areas of the city, causing misery in public life. In Muradpur, Chawkbazar, Bahaddarhat, and Chandgaon residential areas of the city, at least 3 to 4 feet of water has been seen on the road. According to the Meteorological Department, Sandwip in Chattogram recorded 239 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours till Saturday morning, which was the highest in the country while the total rainfall at the same time in the port city was around 200 mm. The Patenga Meteorological Office said heavy rains are expected in the Chattogram region on Sunday and Monday.

Lt Col Shah Ali, director of the biggest waterlogging project in the port city, said heavy rains were falling and there would be some suffering in the areas where the project is underway.
