The covid-19 detection rate in Bangladesh increased to 383 per cent between June 13 and June 19 from 118.1 per cent in the previous week.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 458 Covid cases were identified from 35,037 samples tested between June 6 and June 12 and the number rose to 2,212 from 43,526 samples tested between June 13 and June 19.

Covid cases declined in the country from May 23 to May 29. At that time, 214 people were identified. In the following week, the infection rate was further reduced and 210 were identified between May 30 and June 5.

The infection started to increase again after June 6.

In continuation, Bangladesh on Monday registered one death and 873 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. The daily infection rate jumped to 10.87 per cent. The last death was recorded 20 days ago.

On Sunday, the positivity rate was at 7.38 per cent.

With the latest death, the tally rose to 29,132.

The daily DGHS report also shows that 798 of the 873 newly infected people are from Dhaka city.

Dr Mohammad Robed Amin, line director at the Non-Communicable Disease Control of the DGHS, told The Business Post that Covid is not over yet. It is growing again around the world due to Omicron’s sub-variants, he said.

“People are ignoring the health guidelines since the government relaxed restriction for the low rate of infection. In general, we have to follow the health guidelines to prevent the spread of the disease,” he said.

Bangladesh reported its first Covid cases on March 8, 2020, and the first coronavirus-related death on March 18 of the same year.
