Victims return home as floodwater starts receding

Flood victims began returning to their homes as floodwater started receding from the affected areas in the northern and northeastern regions of the country.

The overall flood situation is expected to continue to improve in the next five days, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).

Furthermore, since there is no likelihood of significant rainfall over the next 48 hours, there is no risk of widespread flooding in the country,

FFWC Sub-Divisional Engineer Sarder Udoy Raihan told The Business Post on Saturday.

He said, “The water of major rivers has been receding for the last two days. As a result, the north and northeast are experiencing less flooding, which will continue for the next 48 hours.”

There is, however, a possibility of some heavy rains in the Teesta basin, as a result of which the water level of the Teesta river may remain close to the danger level.

The FFWC report said all the major rivers in the country are on a falling trend.

Except for the Teesta basin, heavy to very heavy rainfall inside Bangladesh and different upstream Indian regions is unlikely in the next 48 hours.

The Brahmaputa-Jamuna, Ganges-Padma, Dharala, Dudhkumar and all the major rivers of the north-eastern region of the country may continue falling in the next 48 hours.

However, there is a chance of medium to heavy rainfall in the sub-Himalayan West Bengal (Jalpaiguri, Sikkim).

As a result, the water level of the Teesta river may remain close to the danger level.

The flood situation in the Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Kishoreganj, and Brahmanbaria districts and low-lying places of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Serajganj, Tangail, and Jamalpur will improve in the next 24 hours.

However, there is a chance of a short-duration flood in the low-lying areas of the Shariatpur and Madaripur districts in the next 24 hours.

Death toll from floods reaches 82

Floods claimed nine more lives in different parts of the country in the 24 hours till Saturday morning, raising the total fatalities to 82, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Among the nine new deaths, five of them died in the Mymensingh division and four in the Sylhet division.

Of those, seven have died by drowning in floodwater, one from snake biting and another died for other reasons.

The total deaths were recorded from May 17 to June 25.

A total of 1,944 flood shelters have been opened, while 2,051 medical teams are working to provide various health services to the flood-affected people.
