After the inauguration of the Padma Bridge, the government is likely to open the 82km rail track from Dhaka to Bhanga by June next year to ease transportation.

Bangladesh Railway is constructing the 172km rail track from Dhaka to Jashore in two parts, and one of them is the Dhaka-Bhanga line.

“Firstly, we have planned to complete the Dhaka-Bhanga line. We are likely to open it by June next year,” Deputy Project Director (Way and Work) Abu Yousuf Mohammad Shamim said.

He said the project’s progress was good and construction would hopefully be completed by this time frame.

The Bhanga-Jashore part was likely to be completed by 2024, he added.

The project’s progress report said Bangladesh Railway had spent Tk 23,205 crore till May this year and overall progress was 60 per cent.

It said 56 per cent of the Dhaka-Mawa part, 78.5 per cent of the Mawa-Bhanga part, and 50 per cent of the Bhanga-Jashore part was finished.

The cost of constructing the rail line from Dhaka to Jashore via Keraniganj and the Padma Bridge was estimated at Tk 39,247.06 crore. 2,426 acres of land will be acquired for the project. Implementation started in March 2016.

Under the project, a 23.38km elevated rail line will be constructed while there will be no level crossings for smoothening the journey. 20 modern railway stations will be constructed. Of them, 14 are new while six old ones will be reconstructed. Besides, 100 broad gauge railway coaches will be procured.

Granites are being used in constructing the tracks. There will be steel slippers and wooden ties. Stones will be placed on the tracks to prevent derailments.

However, there will be no stones on the viaduct of the Padma Bridge rail link. Trains will run at a speed of 120km per hour.
