Bangladesh-born Fahmida wins Pulitzer

Fahmida Azim, a Bangladesh-born illustrator and author in the US, has won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize as part of the winning team of the 2022 prize for illustrated reporting and commentary.

The Pulitzer authorities awarded her for decorating an illustrated report titled “How I Escaped a Chinese Internment Camp”, which was published on The Insider website on December 28 last year.

Settled in Seattle, Fahmida has gained fame for her work with books on the portrayal of real life characters situated in exceptional circumstances.

The Pulitzer Prize is considered to be the most prestigious award in journalism and publishing.

Fahmida is the first person of Bangladeshi origin to receive the prize in this category. She also won the Golden Kite award for the illustration of the book Samira Surfs earlier this year.

She was honoured for the covers of Muslim Women and Everything in 2020.

In her works, Fahmida focuses on capturing real people with extraordinary lives and fictional people living beautifully ordinary lives.

Earlier in 2018, Mohammad Ponir Hossain won Pulitzer for feature photography while working for Reuters.
