Bridge over Chukuri River soon to boost Sundarbans economy

The government is planning to construct a 1, 234.38-metre-long bridge over Chunkuri River of Khulna district to boost tourism and economy in the Sundarbans areas.

The bridge will connect Dakop and Batiaghata upazilas with Khulna easing road communication with the Sundarbans. In this regard, the Local Government Division has already sent a project proposal to the Planning Commission for approval, a senior official of the Planning Ministry has told The Business Post.

The cost of the project is estimated at Tk745.52 crore. Of which, Tk170.46 crore will come from the government exchequer and Tk584.96 crore from Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD).

The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) will implement the project by June 2027, the official added.

According to the project proposal, acquisition of 26 hectares of land, five lakh cubic meters of soil works, construction of five kilometers of approach road and two kilometers of service road will be done soon.

Besides, 1234.38-meter sub-structure and 1500-meter super structure will be constructed. River management works, construction of toll plazas and consultancy services will also be taken up.

About the matter, Secretary of the Planning Division Md Mamun Al Rashid said, “According to the 8th Five-Year Plan, the government has set a target of constructing 37,500 metres of bridges and culverts across the country.”

The construction of 1234.38-metre bridge under the proposed project will be completed in line with the 8th Five-Year Plan. By constructing a bridge over the Chunkuri River, an improved road network will be established in the southern part of Bangladesh including Dakop and Batiaghata upazila along with Khulna district, he also said.

Besides, economic situation and tourism industry will be developed in the areas near the Sundarban, he added.
