6 buffer warehouses ready for fertiliser

Constructions of six buffer warehouses has already been completed while the rest seven will be done by this December to curb wastage and maintain quality of fertilizers, mainly urea.

The government took up the initiative to construct 13 buffer warehouses in the country to preserve urea fertilizer properly, a senior official of the Planning Commission told The Business Post.

On August 4, the Project Steering Committee held a virtual meeting on a project titled ‘Construction of 13 New Buffer Warehouses in Different Districts of the Country for Fertilizer Storage and Distribution Facilities’, he also said.

At the meeting, Additional Secretary (Planning) of the Industries Ministry Md Nurul Alam said a Tk545 crore project was being implemented to construct 13 buffer warehouses to preserve fertilizers.

The tenure of the project is from January 2017 to December 2022. The project was taken up to achieve self-sufficiency in food production by increasing agricultural production, securing stock of fertilizers, stocking emergency fertilizers and reaching marginal farmers at the earliest, Alam said.

The project director told the meeting that the financial progress from the beginning of the project till this June was Tk376.22 crore which was 68.99 percent of the estimated cost of the project.

Besides, the physical progress of the project stands at 80.48 percent. The overall progress of all the warehouses construction works stands at 77.64 percent.

Out of the 13 buffer warehouses of the project, construction of six warehouses has already been completed. Fertilizer is currently being stored in these warehouses. The construction of the remaining seven buffer warehouses is in progress.

As of July 24, 92.02 percent construction of warehouse in Netrokona has been implemented.

Besides, 95.5 percent in Kishoreganj, 80.60 percent in Rajbari, 72.80 percent in Pabna, 39.65 percent in Gopalganj, 35.41 percent in Barishal and 14.46 percent in Sunamganj have also been completed.

Secretary of the Industries Ministry Zakia Sultana told the meeting that the construction of the warehouses in Netrokona, Kishoreganj, Rajbari and Pabna would be completed by August this year and Gopalganj, Barisal and Sunamganj by November.

Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) under the Ministry of Industries is implementing the project.

With the 13 godowns having 1.5 lakh tonnes of urea preservation capacity each the government uses a total of 24 emergency godowns of Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) to store urea.
