Rice, egg, ginger prices increase

The market situation is grim as prices of most of the commodities including edible oil, atta, flour, and pulse are high.

Prices of many commodities including rice, eggs, chicken, imported ginger and garlic have increased in the last one week.

In particular, the government’s reduction in the price of palm oil and sugar has not been effective in the market.

On Thursday, in various markets in the capital including Segun Bagicha, Jirasail (miniket) and Nazirsail rice was sold at Tk 72-74 per kg, which was Tk 70-72 a week ago.

Apart from this, the prices of medium-quality rice BR Athas, Paijam and other rice also increased by Tk 1-2 per kg. The price of coarse rice has exceeded Tk 50.

Traders said that earlier the price of rice decreased slightly due to the news of import. At that time, coarse rice was available at Tk 48 per kg.

However, the price of rice is increasing again due to the disruption of rice imports due to various reasons. Rice imported from India is available in the market but they are also being sold at the same price as domestic rice.

Apart from rice, the price of eggs has increased by Tk 10 per dozen. Red and white eggs were sold at Tk 140-145 per dozen in the retail market on Friday which was Tk 130-135 last week.

The price of chicken has also increased. Broiler chickens are being sold at Tk 170-180 per kg after an increase of Tk 10.

While the prices of domestic onion and garlic remained stable, the prices of imported ginger and garlic increased the most this week. Imported ginger price rose by Tk 10-15 per kg and was being sold at Tk 160-170 on Friday. Besides, garlic was sold at Tk 120-130 per kg.

Among other commodities, prices of pulse, flour, sugar and edible oil remained unchanged.

The commerce ministry has reduced the price of sugar and palm oil by Tk 6-12 but it still did not affect the market.
