The government has leased 60,000 square kilometer flank area of Habiganj’s Bibiyana, the country’s largest natural gas producing field, to the US Energy Company Chevron where it will drill two more gas wells.

The Energy Division and Petrobangla signed an agreement with Chevron Bangladesh on Sunday in the capital for the expansion of Bibiyana Gas Field.

At the same event, Petrobangla signed two more contracts with Chevron regarding Moulvibazar and Jalalabad gas fields, Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) said on Monday.

Petrobangla said currently 26 wells are in the Bibiyana Gas Field under Chevron Bangladesh. The Chevron will start drilling B-27 and B-28 wells in new areas in 2023.

The three new agreements signed with Chevron Bangladesh are Supplemental Agreement to the Block 12 Production Sharing Contract (PSC) for Bibiyana Flank Area Extension, Amendment of Jalalabad Gas and Condensate Purchase & Sales Agreement and Amendment of Moulvibazar Condensate Purchase & Sales Agreement for Block 13 & 14.

Petrobangla says the country has drilled gas wells vertically. For the first time Chevron will drill deep wells transversely in Bibiyana. The depth of the well in the new area is 8,000 meters and in the existing area it can be as deep as 4,000 meters.

Petrobangla Chairman Nazmul Ahsan said in press release about the rising natural gas production new contract signing with Chevron. “We hoped gas production will increase by 2025.”

During the contract signing ceremony MD Helal Uddin, Additional Secretary of Energy Division, Petrobangla Chairman Nazmul Ahsan, Director (PSC) Md Shaheenur Islam, Chevron Bangladesh President Eric M. Walker and other senior officials were present.

Chevron Bangladesh-operated Bibiyana, the country’s largest gas production field, began commercial production in 2005.

Currently Bibiyana is producing 1,236 mmcf/d of gas which is more than half of the total produced gas in the country.
