Labour strike halts Khatunganj market for hours

Transportation of goods from Khatunganj in the port city of Chattogram came to a standstill for hours following a clash between two groups of workers on Tuesday.

However, the workers called off the strike at night after business leaders and police assured them of taking action, said Sulaiman Badsha, a business leader.

He also said the workers would join their works in the evening.

After a worker was stabbed, his colleagues had called a strike in protest halting the transportation of consumer goods in and out of the wholesale market.

The workers of the market said a pickup van driver who brought goods to the market stabbed Md Masud, one of their fellow workers. They said they wouldn’t return to work until the culprits were arrested.

Noble Chakma, Additional Deputy Commissioner (South) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), said they have been informed about the clash between the workers.

Police have taken necessary steps to control the situation, he said.
